It took until the last few days of the year for me to dial in My Three Words.
I share this to point out that there are times when things don't always come together when we'd like. So, if you still need to land on yours, there's still time.
If you're unfamiliar, I'll save the history lesson on the My Three Words project from Chris Brogan. You can learn more about it here.
I've been choosing Three Words for 10 years now. And regardless of what happens, I always find them useful in some form.
For me, 2022 felt like a year of contradictions. Some events threw everything sideways, yet it was one of the most successful years I've had. But even in those sideways moments, the words I chose continued to serve me and enabled me to show up for my family, friends, and clients.
I can't always control the outcome of each year. But I can control how I show up, act, or respond. I choose words that will ease those efforts.
This is the mindset I'm bringing into 2023 as well. I have lots of plans in motion. I want my words to support my approach and help me do the work to make them real.
My 3 Words for 2023
Process - I have two reasons for choosing this word. The first is as a reminder to process the information: What's important versus what can I ignore? What will I do with this information? The second is to build a series of (repeatable) steps to help me achieve a result (a process). Notice how the word process is both a noun and a verb.
Win - Put more wins on my board. Create more win-win-win situations around me. It also serves as a reminder to play my own game and compete against my inner scorecard. In 2023 I intend to seek opportunities to collaborate with smart people and learn from them.
Shine - Shine light on what's working (and do more of that). I’m shining a light on the people I’m so blessed to know. I’m shining a light on all the lessons I learn so that you can grow from them, too! Shine bright.
Shine puts me in the best position to refine my process so I can get more wins. (See what I did there.)
What about you? Which words did you choose?
Hit reply, and let's talk about them.
Have a great week.

I watched the finale of Champion of Champions. The TV show follows top Swedish athletes who have won gold in their respective fields. But physical strength, technique, and stamina were only one part of their success. An oft-overlooked part of the equation was the mental training required to win... and to keep going. What set them apart was their champion mindset. But what, exactly, does that mean? They compete against themselves The champions defined what winning meant to them. They taught...
Take a moment to think about your habits. Why do you act the way you do? Psychology offers three explanations: Learning by association (classical conditioning): Some things we don't need to learn. They're "hard-wired" into our system from birth; we pair a stimulus (e.g. a loud noise) with a response (fear). This learning is often unconscious and happens quickly. Check out Pavlov's dogs if you're curious to learn more. Learning by consequences (reinforcements/punishments): Some things we learn...
